The day when BIT shook Posted by Kapil Kedia on 18/09/2011 We were busy playing football when we saw students rushing out of their rooms into the open. We thought that perhaps it was a snake (many can be seen these days crawling in the open), but when the story reached our ears, we could only gasp with open mouths. If you'd asked about earthquake from BIT students yesterday, they would've given you loads of theoretical 'gyan'; but if you ask them now, they can enlighten you on how it feels when the earthquake comes.
Every person had a different story to tell. Some had witnessed their beds shaking, the others their window panes. There was smile on every face, ocassionly accompanied by laughter. Facebook and Gtalk were flooded with status about the quake. People had witnessed an event that was very rare in this part of the world. The eye witnesses gave their account of the duration for which the quake lasted. Some said it was 2 minutes, the other said it was nothing less than 4. We took the safer side and very intelligently calculated the average and declared it was 3 minutes.
The question of the day was what the intensity of the quake was. A guy said it was 3 on the richter scale, to which the other guy who seemed more aware replied that you wouldn't even have felt a 3 intensity quake.
All in all, it turned out to be a 15 minutes break for everyone who was busy preparing for placements, who was busy talking to his girlfriend, who was lost in the virtual world of gaming, and all those who think rooms are the best places to hang out in BIT. Unfortuantely, we missed thrashing the opponent team because mother Earth had different plans.
We appreciate mother Earth for showing us Her might, and pray to her not to mistaken us as Japanese. We have much larger eyes, so there should not be any confusion. Here I was rejected in the last round of Directi where only geniuses go. This was the story of the placement season; some were celebrating, others were reflecting; at some faces there was smile, at others ruled dejection; some had the bottle of champagne, the others had routine mess food. Placements divided the students in two groups- placed (haves) and unplaced (have-nots). Here I was among the have-nots, contemplating the unforeseen future, when suddenly it started raining cats and dogs.
My conscious mind did a quick calculation that I wouldn't be able to avoid getting soaked in this rain. The rain lashes made me forget that I was in low spirits, that I was just rejected, that I was among the have-nots of BIT. For that moment, it didn't matter that I was in formals, that everybody was staring at me, what mattered was that I was a BITian and I was proud of that. Because I knew in my heart that these four years that I've spent in such a wonderful place, the wonderful friends that I've made, the classes that I've bunked, the rules that I've broken, the beautiful memories that I've, no one can take that away from me, not even Directi. Posted by Megha Ghosh on 09/03/2010 One fine day when a notice was put up that read, "girls in-time changed to 7 pm w.e.f 3/3/2010", most students rubbed their eyes in disbelief. It so happened that midsems started from 3rd. but some spirited souls braved exams and got out of hostels to see how BIT looks at 7 pm! Lol! Now, what exactly are the changes we get to see?? Well, the canteen and PMC which used to get deserted by 6 pm now has the privilege of being the preferred post 6 pm areas. Evening walkers (girls) can get out after sunset and spare themselves the gaze of people saying "health freak!". Girls gone to town continue their shopping and munching for some more time. However, it gets really very dark after 6:30 pm. So, most girls avoid staying out late. Permalink | Comments(1) HIGHER STUDIES Posted by Amit Sharan Singh on 05/03/2010 With CAT results out (finally!) , a lot of students are busy preparing for GD/PI. 10 students have IIM calls. Shortlisted students can be seen carrying business magazines and devouring every bit of it. There were many GATE takers this time. GATE results were out on 15th March, 2010. There are around eight 99 percentile holders. At least 15 students had applied to foreign universities. Most of them have got admits of their choices! Permalink | Comments(0) PLACEMENTS Posted by Arindam Chatterjee on 05/03/2010 Initially everyone was really apprehensive about placements this time. But all’s well that ends well!. Placements at BIT was totally unaffected by recession. With practically all students bagging a job, most students got star jobs and many landed up in dream companies like Microsoft IDC, Oracle ST, Goldman Sachs and Nomura. Few students regret not being an IITian :) Permalink | Comments(0)
